Dear Diary…

Sunday 7th December 2014

Dear Diary, I’m confused, has someone switched the seasons about and not told me? I’ve spent the afternoon in the garden weedingand cutting the grass, picked a bunch of nasturtiums. Then took the dogs out for a walk and came across flowers that aren’t usually in bloom until at least January. My cheeks and shoulders are rosy pink courtesy of the amazing December sunshine.

Wednesday 10th December:

Dear Diary, Truly confused. The sky came down to the sea today and I’ve been practically marooned indoors with the ensuing deluge. It’s become cooler but during a brief respite in the downpours we managed a quick dog walk and met a couple – clearly not from around here – wearing shorts and vests. Well, I do remember that in my native land any temperature in double digits is akin to a heatwave but I’m most definitely keeping my socks and other cozy layers on.

Friday 12th December

Dear Diary, Now I get it – it really is winter! There have been brief glimpses of the snowy covered mountains but mostly the clouds are still hovering around up there. Should be possible to see them better tomorrow. A full arch rainbow has newly appeared alerting us to more heavy rain about to start…….. more rain? Have we not had enough?? Last night’s storm was incredible, so much so that the roof yielded to the battering and I now have a waterfall feature in my kitchen. Really. Great fun trying to cook or make a coffee when it rains, I need an umbrella and welly boots……….

Down at the cafe we’re weather proofed, the log stove is in place, potatoes bake and chestnuts roast. With a glass of wine or beer in hand what better way to watch the ever changing weather and shifts from glassy calm sea to monster crashing waves?

These are part of the joys of winter in Crete!
